As golfers, we all enjoy the never-ending pursuit of the perfect shot or shooting our lowest round ever, but in between those rare days on the links our enjoyment often comes from the company of friends, and strangers, the beauty of the outdoors, and that peaceful feeling we have as we stroll down the fairway through the early morning dew or into the setting sun. This, is why golf is, and always has been a walking sport.
Growing up as caddies who carried bags all day to have enough money to pay for our own golf, we must admit it took our egos a few years to be ok with the idea of buying an electric golf caddy.
It wasn’t until the 80-year-old version of ourselves weighed in with the thought that reducing the wear and tear on our bodies at an earlier age and consequently extending our golf career for the years that mattered most, did it become obvious that this investment was worth every penny and all of the pride our hardened egos had to swallow.
After purchasing our first motorized golf push cart, we soon discovered we were playing better and feeling more fit because our focus was on the shot in front of us and our body was conserving energy to hit the ball instead of feeling the pain or fatigue that we used to have while pushing a manual cart or carrying our bag.
If you walk into a pro shop in any course throughout Scotland, the home of golf, and ask for a riding cart, you'll be lucky if they let you stay in the country for another day, let alone play a round of golf. Here in America, it has become normal to see riding carts on a golf course so we think nothing of it. But the truth is, if profit wasn’t the motive, no golf course in the world would allow a 1,000-pound riding machine onto the precious turf you are about to play your favorite game on.
And if not for our egos, we surely wouldn’t walk four hours hunched over a push cart or leaning left all day as we carry our clubs knowing study after study shows the negative impact this can have on our muscles, discs, and nerves.
